Remember - hypothermia can happen in warm weather too.

A good article, courtesy of the Boat US Foundation.  Six steps to safer boating..

This summer our Fripp waters will be warm and inviting, but even at over 70 degrees water temperature, water and wind can combine to create hypothermia.  During the winter our water temperatures can drop to or below 50 degrees.

In 70 degree water you're survival time in the water is quite long but some symptoms can start to set in after a few hours in the water.  Wet clothing from immersion or rain combined with wind will bring a quicker chill so have wind proof jacket handy.

In 50 degree to 60 degree water an average boater will reach exhaustion or become unconscious in 1 to 2 hours.

In 40 degree to 50 degree water that average boater will reach exhaustion or become unconscious in 30 to 60 minutes.

Many of the symptoms of hypothermia begin sooner and resemble those of a drunken stupor: sleepiness, clumsiness, confusion and even slurred speech. Doctors also check for shivering, a weak pulse, low blood pressure, and a body temperature below 96 degrees F. (Normal body temperature is 98.6 degrees F.)

41' Hattras Goes in St. Helena Sound - Picking Up the Pieces February 2018.
That was literally what Dave Manning and Dan Dunne, Rescue Crew for Fripp Island Sea Rescue, were doing on February 4th.  This large boat with three men aboard went aground and broke apart near Morgan Island.  The next morning, a dingy and numerous parts of the broken boat were washing in from the sea with the tide into Fripp Inlet.  Angie Diemont with FISR took the call from 911 Dispatch and then joined Robbie White at Russ Point landing for more eyes on the water.  Dave and Dan launched R2 and motored to the Fripp Inlet.  Initially it appeared the wreck had happened locally but what began as a search mission turned to salvage once the Coast Guard advised of the sinking of My Gal Sal several miles north of Fripp the previous evening.  We learned at that time that the crew of three had been rescued by USCG Helo and were safe.  Click below for short video and the full story from the Beaufort Gazette/Island Packet news.  More pictures on our Sea Rescue Photos page.
